Loris sits at the top of Horry County where the farms start, an easy drive up Highway 701 from where we are based. The town itself has small-town yards under old oaks and pecans. Around it, wooded lots and field edges carry pines and hardwoods that have grown for fifty years without a saw touching them.
Trees in Loris
Shade oaks and pecans around the older houses in town and along the farm roads. The live oaks and white oaks mostly want deadwood out and clearance off the roof. Pecans get big, get brittle, and drop limbs on cars without warning as they age. Water oaks near the end of their lives start dropping limbs and dying from the top.
Pines along drives, field edges, and property lines, and in the neighborhoods that have gone in along Highway 9 and Highway 701. Tall, shallow-rooted, and often close to a barn or a shed as well as the house. These are the trees that lean and snap in storms.
Sweetgums and fast hardwoods that have taken over fence lines and lot corners.
Felling versus rigging
On a Loris lot with nothing under the tree, felling it whole and cutting it up on the ground is the fast, economical way to do it. When the tree is over the house, the barn, or the power drop, we climb and take it down in pieces, lowering each section on a rope. Corey will tell you which one your tree is when he gives you the price, and why.
Storm work
Inland storms bring straight-line wind and tornadoes as well as the tail end of tropical systems. After a blow we clear pines off drives, roofs, and outbuildings, remove hangers from the oaks, and haul the debris. If the power drop is involved, the power company clears it before we start.
